California sheephead ecology. California sheephead are a species of temperate wrasse, widely distributed along the eastern Pacific Ocean from Monterey Bay, CA, USA, to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico ().Members of the family Labridae, sheephead inhabit nearshore rocky reefs and kelp beds from the intertidal zone to depths of ~90 m (). Bull kelp forms extensive beds from Point Conception, CA, to Unmak Island, AK (Abbott and Hollenberg ; Miller and Estes ), on bedrock, reefs and boulder fields 3 to 20 meters deep (Nicholson ; Vadas ). Nereocystis and Macrocystis also form mixed stands in southeast Alaska and British Columbia. Hexagrammos decagrammus, the kelp greenling, is a species of greenling that occurs in rocky nearshore areas of the northern Pacific especially around British Columbia and Alaska, and is common on kelp beds and on sand bottoms. They feed on crustaceans, polychaete worms, brittle stars, mollusks, and small : Actinopterygii.

With 67 native and 15 or so introduced species of freshwater fishes and native species of marine fishes, British Columbia boasts a fish fauna much richer than most provinces in Canada.
A simple count of named species as a measure of diversity, however. In Darwin's Fishes, Daniel Pauly presents an encyclopaedia of ichthyology, ecology and evolution, based upon everything that Charles Darwin ever wrote about fish.
Entries are arranged alphabetically and can be about, for example, a particular fish taxon, an anatomical part, a chemical substance, a scientist, a place, or an evolutionary or ecological concept. Distribution of Kelp in Washington State Page 2 of 2 generally more abundant than giant kelp along the Strait of Juan de Fuca, in terms of total bed area.
However, giant kelp forms denser beds. While both species are fairly variable from year-to-year, bull kelp exhibits higher interannual Size: 67KB.
In Nova Scotia the annual harvest of the intertidal seaweed Ascophyllum nodosum exceeds 20 tons. This study investigated the possible impact of removal of the seaweed on intertidal abundance of fishes and their gut contents.
At sites near Lower Argyle, Nova Scotia, absolute abundance of fish in small areas with Ascophyllum removed and intact was determined with pop-up Cited by: These fish, however, form only part of the freshwater fish diversity in British Columbia.
There are lots of other species, many of which are found nowhere else in Canada. The singular nature of BC’s fish fauna has two principal causes. First, the major source of our fish fauna was the Columbia. With its striking plumage, the great blue heron is one of the most widely recognized wading birds in North America.
Riding on kelp beds in the Queen Charlotte Islands, wading in coastal streams along the mainland, poised motionless at the water's edge on a misty morning, or nesting in the limbs of old-growth forests, this stately bird is a familiar sight on the coast of British Columbia.
It is an indispensable resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and for those seeking an authoritative guide to British Columbia s freshwater fishes.
I regard this regional fish book as one of the best if not the very best of all Cited by: These waterways support diverse fish populations. In Fishes of the Columbia Basin, fisheries biologist Dennis Dauble draws on more than three decades of professional experience and a lifetime as a fisherman to cover more than 60 fish species found in the region/5(3).
An Introduction to the Ecoregions of British Columbia 10 Biogeoclimatic Units: Biogeoclimatic (BGC) units represent classes of ecosystems under the same regional climate. There is a hierarchy of units with the Biogeoclimatic subzone being the basic unit.

Otter-protected kelp beds absorb about 12 times as much carbon dioxide during photosynthesis as thinned-out kelp beds, according to a study published in the September issue of Frontiers in Ecology.

Ecology & Life History General Description: The largest North American freshwater fish; maximum length about cm, maximum mass lbs ( kg).
Global Reproduction Comments: In the Columbia River, spawns May-July (Wydoski and Whitney ). In California, spawning apparently occurs between mid-March and early June (Moyle ).
